Music: Andrea Salcedo And Francisco “YiYi” Orozco

The MCI is proud to welcome Mexican flamenco guitarist, Andrea Salcedo with special guest, flamenco singer and percussionist, Francisco “Yiyi” Orozco on Thursday, February 28 ^th at 6:45 pm at the Music Room of the Institute.

About Andrea Salcedo:

A native of Mexico, and based in the city of Chicago, Andrea received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance on Classical Guitar from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, where she studied under Fareed Haque. She is also alumna of the famous conservatory for children and youth in the city of Chicago, Merit School of Music, where she graduated with honors. Andrea has studied in Spain and the United States with some of the most important figures of the flamenco guitar such as Manolo Sanlúcar, José Antonio Carmona “Pepe Habichuela”, Jesús de Aracely, Eduardo Rebollar, Antonio Sánchez, and Joni Jiménez, among others. Currently, Andrea is an artist-in-residence at the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago.

She performed at the Chicago Flamenco Festival 2018, opening the concert of maestro Pepe Habichuela. She also performed at the screening of the documentary “Flight of the guitar: Dreaming of Paco de Lucía / La guitarra vuela: Soñando a Paco de Lucía” during the 34th Chicago Latino Film Festival. She had the honor to perform with one of the last guitars of the late Paco de Lucia. Andrea performed at the VII Latin American Guitar Festival of Chicago. She has also performed at the most important venues in Chicago such as: Chicago Symphony Hall, Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Chicago Cultural Center, National Museum of Mexican Art, VanderCook College of Music, and Old Town School of Folk Music, among others. She has also performed in Michigan, Wisconsin, California, and New York.

About Francisco Javier Orozco, Yiyi:

Considered a “child prodigy” of percussion, Yiyi began his professional career at the young age of twelve. By seventeen years of age he recorded his first CD and became more involved with singing, and left Spain for Germany on a long-term contract with the company “Flamenco Rubio”. Since then he has performed with top dance companies such as “Compañia Flamenca Alhama” throughout Europe and Japan.
