Oaxaca Central: Contemporary Mexican Printmaking
The Mexican Cultural Institute presents Oaxaca Central: Contemporary Mexican Printmaking, a special preview of the upcoming exhibition at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia on view February 20, 2025 — May 11, 2025. This selection offers a glimpse into the vibrant tradition of Oaxacan printmaking, a defining force in contemporary Mexican art.
Oaxaca has become a global hub for printmaking, where workshops nurture a new generation of artists blending traditional techniques with contemporary innovation. Through their work, they explore themes of identity, community, and resistance, using printmaking as a powerful medium for discourse and activism.
As an invitation to engage with the evolving legacy of Oaxacan printmaking, this preview includes six works from El Rebozo, an exhibition by the collective MACMO – Mujeres Artistas Creando Movimiento. This project highlights the role of women in art, community building, and cultural storytelling.
The Mexican Cultural Institute extends its gratitude to the Chrysler Museum of Art for its invaluable collaboration in bringing this exhibition to life. We also thank Dupont Underground for its support in expanding the reach of this project. Their commitment to fostering cross-cultural dialogue underscores the enduring artistic and historical ties between Mexico and the United States.
