La Niña de la Casa Azul Dance Performance
Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was often taken for a surrealist, despite her insistence that she was simply depicting her own, sometimes tragic, reality. Through dance, video art, and theatrical methods, choreographer Aurélien Kairo takes an exploration of Kahlo’s pain to experiment with the beauty that can come from the multifaceted, but otherwise isolated states of mind that physical suffering can cause.
La Niña de la Casa Azul was created by Aurélien Kairo, French choreographer and founder of the De Fakto dance company, in collaboration with Bejart and Pietragalla, two renouned French choreographers. This show will feature two French and three Mexican dancers in its gripping depiction of Kahlo’s tragic yet beautiful life.

“Like a pirouette in the destiny of a broken life, La Niña de la Casa Azul has all the combativeness, the flamboyance, and the faith in life of this unusual artist, battered in her skin following a horrific bus accident, which are all highlighted here. It’s an invitation to live—Vida la vida!—and to dance, toward and in spite of everything.” — Maison de la Culture de Nevere et de la Nièvre
