Crochet Workshop with Lady Cactus

Cactus can be found almost everywhere throughout Mexico, from Sonora in the North to Oaxaca in the South, and has become an enduring symbol of Mexico abroad. The cactus plant is so representative of our culture that it is depicted in the National Emblem of our country: a golden eagle devouring a snake atop of a prickly cactus.

Lady Cactus, a Mexican artist based in DC, is an expert in the delicate art of crocheting. During this workshop, she will teach a couple of basic stitches, and build on that with more advanced stitches to teach us to create adorable and vibrant cactus.

Due to high demand, there's two available dates for this one-session workshop: Saturday, March 5 from 1 to 3 PM or Saturday, March 12 from 1 to 3 PM. Please pick the date that suits you better at the moment of purchasing your ticket. The cost is $30 USD for the workshop and it includes all the materials.

The cactus workshop will be held at the Matías Romero Creative Lab of the Mexican Cultural Institute, a recently inaugurated space that strives to promote art creation and artistic expressions from and to the local community.

*Please note: The fee that you pay to participate in this workshop, will be used entirely to support the artist and the local artistic community.

ABOUT LADY CACTUS:

Noemi Mares is originally from Michoacán, a land of lakes, volcanoes, and mountains dotted with the cactus emblematic of Mexico. She learned to knit from her mother and crochet from her grandmother, carrying on a tradition that includes using only natural fibers and dyes. Like the cactus seeds that spread over the centuries from North America to the Mediterranean and beyond, Noemi has taken her art to the four corners of the world. She has lived with her family in places like Côte d’Ivoire in West Africa, Beijing, Bangkok, Jerusalem, and London where her art was featured at Covent Garden. Noemi now lives in Bethesda, Maryland, and is a proud vendor at Washington DC's Eastern Market.
