Catarsis: Announcement of the new world
The Mexican Cultural Institute is pleased to announce that it will re-open and debut its new temporary exhibition Catarsis on July 19, 2021.
The Institute will be open to the public for free with no need to RSVP tickets, Monday - Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturdays from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The MCI asks its visitors to social distance and wear masks at the time of visit, in view of virus variants.
Catarsis, curated by Enrique Quiroz and Brennan Upchurch, highlights the periods of isolation, melancholy, restricted travel, closed borders, and barren cityscapes that encompassed all of 2020. Catarsis will be composed of twenty-six art pieces from the permanent Kimberly Collection of the Mexican Cultural Institute, each depicting a unique perspective of what many of us felt during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the bizarre, extraordinary, sometimes uncanny works of art selected, the MCI hopes that its audience will find scenes and sights they can relate to while viewing the exhibition.
"Catharsis is about cleansing and healing at one and the same time - healing memories and attitudes, healing the spirit and the heart." - Desmond Tutu.
Artists featured in Catarsis: Vicente Rojo, HĂ©ctor Ayala, Gustavo Montoya, Luis Nishizawa, Joy Laville, MarĂa E. Figueroa, Valenzuela Tapia, Vicente GandĂa, JosĂ© Chávez Morado, Leonora Carrington, Cristina Rubalcava, Arturo Rivera, JosĂ© Luis Cuevas, Francisco Toledo, JesĂşs MartĂnez, and Arnaldo Coen.
