To commemorate Women's History Month, we'll host for the second time a workshop on how to create your own Tenango embroidery. Those interested will be able to learn about the creative processes through artisan Araceli Calixto’s techniques. Tenangos are an embroidery style from the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, more specifically the town of Tenango de Doria. Based on the traditional Otomi embroidery typical of the area, this craft has existed since pre-Columbian times in Mesoamerica. During the ’60s, when a regional drought severely disrupted the local economy’s dependence on subsistence agriculture, women learned and worked this technique giving way to these creative pieces of art. Even today, most of the work is done by individual families, but there are women's cooperatives that work together to produce wonderful and colorful embellishments.

Materials included in the donation: Embroidery canvas (the MCI will provide the patterns), multicolor cotton thread, embroidery needle, embroidery hoop.
