Join us for a bilingual conversation about the beautifully illustrated book Benito Juárez Fights for Justice with Mexican illustrator Beatriz Gutierrez Hernandez and storyteller Dulce Govea. The event will last one hour, and coffee from 1790 Coffee will be available for adults.
This book tells the story of Benito Juárez, a remarkable man who rose from humble beginnings to become president of Mexico. From his childhood in Oaxaca to his impactful political career, Juárez's unwavering dedication to justice and equality shines through. Beatriz Gutiérrez Hernández, the talented author and illustrator, will be present to share insights into her creative process and the inspiring legacy of Benito Juárez. Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about this important figure in Mexican history.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Beatriz Gutiérrez Hernández is an illustrator, author and animator born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. She graduated from Pratt Institute with a BFA in Communications Design, and lived in Brooklyn, New York for several years. She is interested in children’s books, editorial illustration, animation, branding, and more.
Beatriz is the illustrator of Dreams from Many Rivers, written by Margarita Engle, and Desert Song, written by Laekan Zea Kemp. Her debut picture book Benito Juárez Fights for Justice earned her an Ezra Jack Keats Honor.
Her upcoming book, Pearls in the Sand, will come out in September of 2025.
ABOUT THE STORYTELLER AND LEARNING EXPERIENCE DESIGNER:
Dulce Govea Aguilar began her storytelling journey over 15 years ago at Fondo de Cultura Económica bookstores in Mexico. After moving to the United States, she rekindled her passion for storytelling and, for the past three years, has been sharing stories at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C., where she teaches the Cuentos y Fandangos class in collaboration with Gabriel Guzmán.
Throughout her career, she has participated as a storyteller in various cultural celebrations and events, including the Cinco de Mayo commemoration at the Mexican Cultural Institute, the Día de Muertos celebration at Franklin Park in 2022, book fairs organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico in the United States, and children's bazaars at the Washington Waldorf School.
With over 20 years of experience designing learning experiences for children and adults, Dulce firmly believes in the transformative power of stories. For her, storytelling is one of the oldest and most powerful tools we have to learn, connect, and preserve our cultural heritage.
