The Power of Women’s Hand an Alliance that works: Tenango Embroidery Workshop
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Lima Declaration, which established the Pacific Alliance, the diplomatic missions of the four-member countries in the United States will carry out: The Power of Women’s Hands: An alliance that works, an exhibition, and series of workshops to highlight the richness and diversity of handicrafts created by women from Colombia, Mexico, Chile, and Peru.
These events will start in July with a virtual exhibition of artisans from each country in which the audience will be able to observe the work and quality of the products and understand the value of the manufactures and their relationship with the alliance and the culture of each country and region.
On August 28th, the Mexican Cultural Institute (MCI) will host a workshop on how to create your own Tenango embroidery. Those interested will be able to learn about the creative processes through artisan Araceli Calixto’s techniques. Tenango’s are a style of embroidery from the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, more specifically the town of Tenango de Doria. Based on the traditional Otomi embroidery of the area, this craft has existed since the pre-Columbian period in Mesoamerica. During the ’60s, when a regional drought severely disrupted the local economy’s dependence on subsistence agriculture, women learned and worked this technique giving way to these creative pieces of art. Even today, most of the work is done within individual families, but there are cooperatives of women who work together to produce wonderful and colorful embellishments.
