Music

Magos Herrera, one of Mexico’s most recognized voices in the realm of jazz, joined forces with Brooklyn Rider, one of America’s finest string quartets to create Dreamers, a record aimed at unfolding a unique musical synergy between Ibero-American poetry and musical virtuosity in the United States.

The recording, released on September 21st, 2018, includes gems of the Ibero-American songbook such as Volver a los 17, Coraçao Vagabundo, and Balderrama, as well as pieces written to accompany texts by Hispanic renown writers Octavio Paz, Rubén Darío, and Federico García Lorca. All songs were reimagined by a superb group of arrangers including Jaques Morelenbaum, Gonzalo Grau, Diego Schissi, Guillermo Klein, and Brooklyn Rider’s own Colin Jacobsen.

Join us for an unforgettable night with Grammy-nominated Magos Herrera and the members of Brooklyn Rider moderated by Felix Contreras, host of Alt.Latino, NPR's program about Latin Alternative music and Latino culture, on March 6 at 6:45pm at the Mexican Cultural Institute, in a one-hour conversation on a collaboration that has built powerful bridges and amazed both the Mexican and American critics.

This event presents a glimpse of what is to be expected at their concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts on April 7th.

An opportunity to meet Magos Herrera and Brooklyn Rider, and get to know Dreamers from behind the scenes: the motivations, the challenges, and the reactions on the way.

PRESS QUOTES
"The timing of the release and the cumulatively stunning performance by Miss Herrera and Brooklyn Rider make this music (and the disc) something to absolutely die for, not the least because all of this music contains valuable messages for our or indeed any time, all of which is superlatively performed by one of the great modern singers of our time." —LATIN JAZZ NETWORK

“Herrera’s voice lightens to a wry smile as she sings of ideas entangling like ivy growing up a wall. She gets way under the skin of the song, recalling great communicators like Edith Piaf or Billie Holiday.” —NPR

"You can now declare Magos Herrera to be one of the greatest contemporary interpreters of song." —LATIN JAZZ NETWORK

“While it may sound incongruous to pair a Mexican jazz singer with a classical string quartet but the gamble paid off spectacularly in Dreamers.” —NPR ALL SONGS CONSIDERED / 50 BEST ALBUMS OF 2018

“Merges wonderment with disillusion.” —NEW YORK TIMES

“Dreamers is not only a work of art, setting musicians of the highest order to accomplished music with purpose, but it is a work of love as well.” —SOUNDS AND COLOURS

“The thirteen songs extend from romantic balladry to jubilant celebrations, with the smoky languor of her voice ably matched by the vocal-like sensuality of the quartet. The vocal/strings combination in this case is magical.” —TEXTURA

“[the musicians’] fluid phrasing and rhythmic dexterity lifts us into the orbits of these visionary songs.” —iTUNE
